Many consider the Golden Arrow to be the best looking Land Speed Record Car ever built. It was designed by England's leading auto engineer Mr J.S Irving. Although its official name was the "Irving-Nappier Special" it became known as the Golden Arrow because of its color and the shape of its engine manifolds. The streamlined aluminum Body was revolutionary. The Large slab sides were filled with ice to cool the massive 930 horsepower engine. This car was built for one purpose-to set a new land speed record. On March 11th, 1929, a vast crowd lined the long sand beach that stretched from Daytona to Ormonde, Florida . This 20 mile stretch of compacted sand has been the site of several attempts over the last few years. After only one quick test run at 100mph or so, the car made its two record runs up and down the beach within the 60 minute time limit. The Golden Arrow achieved an average speed of 231.44 mph, making it the new land speed record holder.
